Dolce & Gabbana — How It All Started

As you all might know Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian luxury fashion brand by designers Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbana. It all started in 1985 in Milan where they presented their first women’s collection and a year later their shops were open to the public.

Their products evolved from women’s clothing to men’s collection then to footwear, accessories and perfume. They have their own wide range of products which attracts a lot of superior customers.

Their unique design aesthetic of feminine sensuality and exotic Mediterranean characteristics provide a contemporary take on fashion that has attracted an elite celebrity following.

Their fourth collection had made a significant impact on the Italian fashion market. In this collection, Dolce drew upon his Sicilian roots. One of the pieces from their fourth collection was labelled “The Sicilian Dress” by the fashion press and was named by author Hal Rubenstein as one of the 100 most important dresses ever designed. It is considered to be the most representative piece of this era for the brand.

In 1991, their men’s collection was awarded the Woolmark Award for the most innovative men’s collection of the year. What is considered to be their first foray into international recognition came when Madonna wore a corset made of gemstones and an accompanying jacket from Dolce & Gabbana at the 1991 New York City premiere of Truth or Dare: In Bed with Madonna. This caught the attention of the public eye and more influencers were interested in the brand while more collaborations were brought in later. In 1994 they launched the D&G label, inspired by street style and a more youthful look. The clothes were produced and distributed by Ittierre.

In 2003 for their Milan men’s show, they took their inspiration from contemporary soccer stars. It was considered enlightening to introduce the mixed periods and countries, masculine and feminine looks, fabrics and styles.

Overall, the Dolce & Gabbana woman is unbiased and brazen, presenting a woman who simultaneously reveals and conceals brassieres and corsets, lace, lingerie, and veils, and who is disturbing in her impetuous sensuality-a provocative woman proud of her body.
