Thinking Ahead: The Rise of the Headband
Now, let’s get one thing straight — headbands are not new. In fact, the trendy accessory dates back to the 80s when the queen of fashion herself, Princess Diana used to wear them. In recent years, this trend has picked up again, becoming huge among celebs, socialites and influencers.
The last time I wore a headband, I was probably about 6 and it was most likely pink with flowers on it. But funnily enough, this would be very on-trend today.
In more recent months, the headband has come to embody a certain trait — power. Back in February, we were graced with Amanda Gorman wonderful words and fabulous fashion at the Inauguration. Her powerful speech moved people, not just emotionally but physically to seek out the headband that she wore.
Gorman’s red Prada number clearly sparked a boost in the headband trend, as Lyst reported a 560% increase in searches for “red headband” during the first quarter of 2021.
Unsurprisingly, the Inauguration headband sold out shortly after the ceremony with brands from Prada to Amazon selling similar styles.
Gorman took to Instagram to explain the inspiration behind her iconic look; “At the inauguration, I truly wanted to continue the history of strong women in headbands. It was my mom who suggested I wear it horizontal with my thick braids. I highly suggest a headband crown for anyone wanting to stand taller, straighter, and prouder.”
