This time last year some show just managed to go ahead whilst others were just outright cancelled due to imminent lockdown. So this year, designers really had to think outside of the box in order to make their shows creative, entertaining and engaging for their virtual audiences. And let’s just say, they did not disappoint. Not only were the collections amazing but the locations were beyond creative.

Let’s give a rundown of some of the best ones….

Coperni

This was one of the few shows that actually had a live audience. However, they were sat in cars. Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant decided to use cars to bubble the guests so make the show COVID safe. But to take it even further the cars actually made up the runway and their headlights were used to illuminate the runway and the models walking along it. Essential it was a drive-in show. Genius.

Balenciaga

Gamifying fashion to new levels, this season’s collection existed as a part of a game Gvasalia created, Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow. In the game, users are projected into 2030 where you have to battle through the anxieties of our present dark age to reach a better one, all the while, dresses in Balenciaga fall 2021 to help get you there.

Dolce and Gabbana

Yet another brand that was influenced by the gamification of fashion, Dolce and Gabbana were inspired by the e-girls and boys of TikTok. Think artificial colours, fake textures, and digitally enhanced features you could imagine. They also collaborated up with Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, who made the robots that also featured on their runway.

Miu Miu

Perhaps one of the highest runways this season, Miu Miu shot its show from Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites. The collection, like many others, was a cross between indoor and outdoor dressing, a mixture of lingerie and skiwear.

Louis Vuitton

Shot in the Louvre’s Denon Wing, models adorned clothes inspired by ancient Rome and Greece. Ghesquière teamed up with Italian design atelier Fornasetti to create ancient-inspired figures, mimicking those the models were walking past.
